Our Building

The Sandhills Jewish Congregation (SJC) - Beth Shalom

is a warm and vibrant congregation devoted to Jewish learning, worship and acts of loving-kindness. We are affiliated with the Reform Movement and are members of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and we are also affiliated with the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL).

Our membership comes from all branches of Judaism and we are a very welcoming community.  Beth Shalom is located just outside of Pinehurst, NC and is the only Jewish congregation within a 50 mile radius, with members coming from Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Seven Lakes, Whispering Pines, Carthage and Sanford.

Beth Shalom opened its doors in September of 2002.  Our membership as of 2017 includes more than 100 households of which about 30% are interfaith.  Just about everyone in the congregation has relocated to our community, so we all have become an extended family to each other.  We have about 25 children enrolled in our Religious School program.  We follow a curriculum provided by ISJL and taught by our volunteer teachers.  Other than our Rabbi, there is no Temple staff, everything is done by volunteer members.

What SJC has to offer

Shabbat Services – On the third Friday of each month Rabbi Brickman leads the congregation in a Shabbat Service at 7 PM. Periodically we also offer lay lead Services and potluck Shabbats.

High Holy Days – SJC offers both adult and children’s services at Beth Shalom.  Membership includes High Holy Day seating.

Holidays – Hanukah party, Passover Seder, Sukkot, Tashlik, TuB’shevat, Yom Hashoah.

Religious and Hebrew Education Programs – Our religious school program emphasizes Jewish learning in a fun and stimulating educational environment.  We follow a curriculum provided by the ISJL.  Dedicated members volunteer to teach our youth on Sundays. The Rabbi also teaches at the Religious school during his once a month visits.

Adult Education – On Rabbi weekends we offer Torah study and discussion sessions.  Periodically we offer special lectures and events bringing outside speakers to the community.  We also have a regular book group and movie and discussion sessions.

Life Cycle Events – We will assist members with all life cycle events, such as baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, funerals, and unveilings.  Each event is personalized to meet the needs of each family. Temple facilities are also available for use during these important events.

Social Programs – Special events such as our Sunday Lecture Series, annual picnic, dinner parties, dances, bagel brunches and fundraising events are all opportunities to get together with fellow members.  Recently, we added a Cards 'N Nosh group to play the card game Hand and Foot (similar to Canasta).
